ABOUT THE UNIVERSITY

Prof. Assen Zlatarov University is the only autonomous state-funded Higher Institution in the southeastern region of Bulgaria. It was established in 1963 by decree ¹ 162 of the Council of Ministers as a Higher Chemical and Technological Institute. Five years later the National Assembly decided to commemorate the work and contribution of the great Bulgarian scientist and public figure Prof. Assen Zlatarov, giving his name to the University. Ever since, the University has been connected with the outstanding personality of its patron. On 1st August 1995 a resolution was passed by the National Assembly and the Institute was transformed into Prof. Assen Zlatarov University. It incorporated all state institutions of higher education on the territory of Burgas – the Higher Chemical Institute, the Pedagogy Faculty (The Teacher Training College), the Medical College, the Technical College, and the College of Tourism. On 24th March 2000 the Council of Ministers approved of the new university structure proposed by the Academic Council. Prof. Assen Zlatarov University was institutionally accredited according to resolution ¹16 of 17.05.2007 by the National Assessment and Accreditation Agency of the Republic of Bulgaria for the term of five years. Students are trained in three faculties and three colleges and obtain the degrees of Professional Bachelor, Bachelor, Master and PhD. The teaching staff of the university is highly qualified and committed. There are 300 university teachers. 96 of them have an academic rank (professors and associate professors) and 50 of them have a scientific degree. Their research work has found expression in more than 270 monographs and textbooks and 3200 scientific publications. The university maintains intensive scientific relations with universities in England, France, Germany, Russia, etc. This provides opportunities for scientific specialization and study practice of teachers and students, lecturers exchange programmes as well as exchange of study and scientific literature. The University campus comprises 5 buildings, sports facilities, three hostels, a university canteen, a post office, and a medical care center. The hostels accommodate all the students who are not residents of Burgas. The university library has 250 000 volumes in different languages. There is also a printing house to help the study process of the university. It publishes textbooks, laboratory and seminar handbooks. The biggest employer of university graduates is LUKOIL Neftochim Burgas AD. It provides employment to students in the Technical Faculty and scholarships to graduates recognized for high academic achievements.
