History of the Department:
  The specialty was revealed by a decision of AC as "Industrial Ecology" in 1991. In the same year, by a decision of the Council of Ministers and an order of the Rector, a functional department of the same name was created. In 1997 it was transformed into the Department of „Ecology and Environmental Protection“. Ex Heads of the Department are: Assoc. Prof. Radostin Kutzarov (1991-1997), Assoc. Prof. Dr. Maria Dimova (1997-2007) and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Donka Todorova (2008-2017).

 Program for Complex State Examination - Specialized EEP, Bachelor's Degree Program

  The main purpose of the education is to train “ecologists” to carry out various activities in the production and non-production sphere of public life, including in production enterprises, in research and design institutes, design offices, etc. They are training to fill management positions at various levels in the Ministry of Environment and Water system, local and state management bodies, companies in the field of production and services, etc.

 The education is based on the fundamental and special training received in the Bachelor's and Master's degrees.

 During their studies, bachelors receive specific knowledge and skills in the following areas:
   - Characteristics of major pollutants, identification of sources, estimation of emissions, distribution and impact on air of waters, soils;
   - Waste Management;
   - Ecology and ecosystem management;
   - Specific knowledge of hazardous and toxic substances;
   - Environmental regulatory framework;
   - Environmental Impact Assessment from single and complex sources of pollution.

  The fundamental training and specific knowledge and skills of the masters are directed in the following areas:
  - Air, water and soil and waste management;
   - Ecosystem management and environmental risk assessment;
   - Specific knowledge of environmental pollutants, including hazardous and toxic substances;
   - Environmental impact assessment from single and complex pollution sources.

  The acquired knowledge ensures adaptability and mobility of graduates of Bachelor's and Master's degrees in ecology.

  Each year, the department trains about 100 bachelors and 30 masters in accredited curricula. Over 600 students have successfully completed their studies through the academic halls and laboratories, having successfully graduated after passing the state examination or diploma work.

  Many graduates of Bachelor's and Master's Degree Programs in EEP work in the specialty in different companies, manufacturing enterprises, different management structures.


 The Department of Ecology and Environmental Protection received accreditation in 4 consecutive program accreditations from the National Agency for Assessment and Accreditation - in 2002, 2007, 2013 and 2019.
